It seems that only in Calgary will a “Severe Weather Warning” be issued only 10 minutes before the streets and buildings are pelted with golfball-sized hail. Ten minutes previous to this storm starting, I was strolling down the streets of downtown, which, while not sunny, were dry and rather warm. I got into the door of Western Canadian Place, and all hell broke loose. By the time I got up to my cubicle, the view from my window was literally pitch-black. At 1:45pm in the afternoon, the “Severe Thunderstorm” (predicted ten minutes previously) unleashed its fury.
I feel SO bad for everyone at the Stampede right now! My cubiclemate is fretting about his car, in an open parking lot down the road. Phones are ringing. People are standing at their windows, and the thunder is loud enough to vibrate the floor. Yay for the most unpredictable weather system in Western Canada.
EDIT (2:15pm): For certain parts of Alberta around Calgary (not Calgary itself), this has now been upgraded to a tornado warning. Jeesh.
